Dewey The Library Cat Gets a Movie Deal, Meryl Streep Signs on to Play Librarian

Vicki Myron has published another children's book about Dewey, the kitten she rescued from her library's drop box. Credit: Hachette Book Group, USA

He grew up entertaining the children who tromped into an Iowa library for story hour, so it was only a matter of time before this furry friend, aptly named Dewey Readmore Books, starred in his own children's books.

In fact "Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library" is the follow up to Vicki Myron's best-selling memoir "Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World," which is set to be made into a movie by New Line Cinema. Meryl Streep has signed on to play Myron, but the former librarian, who discovered Dewey as a kitten abandoned in the Spencer, Iowa library drop box on a chilly winter morning in the 1980s, isn't done telling this feline's tale.

Diaper Cakes

A diaper cake isn't really a cake at all. It's made up of dozens of disposable or cloth diapers, layered in such a way that the finished product resembles a tall, white wedding cake.

Diaper cakes range from the simple to the elaborate. Rolled up diapers secured with rubber bands are the foundation of a diaper cake. Ribbons, bows and other trimmings are then used to decorate the cake. Some diaper cakes consist entirely of diapers while others have hidden gifts for baby or mom concealed within the layers.

Diaper cakes can be purchased from specialty stores or hand-made at home.

Diaper cakes are often given as gifts to pregnant women and make for a unique and practical table centerpiece at a baby shower.

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood is a character in a fairy tale about a wolf and a young girl. The most widely known version of Little Red Riding Hood is based on a Brothers Grimm story.

In the story, Little Red Riding Hood wears a red, hooded cloak as she makes her way through the forest alone to deliver food to her sick grandmother. Along the way, Little Red Riding hood encounters a wolf. The wolf intends to eat Little Red Riding Hood and tricks her into picking flowers while he runs ahead to the grandmother's house.

Having eaten the grandmother, the wolf dons her clothes and goesinto her bed to await Little Red Riding Hood's arrival. Little Red Riding hood notices that her grandmother looks different and comments on her appearance. When she declares "what big ears you have!" the wolf leaps up and swallows her whole.

A hunter arrives and cuts open the wolf, releasing Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother unharmed. Note: There are many variations of this ending, some more graphic than others.

Attachment Parenting: A Brief Overview

Attachment parenting is a parenting style developed by William Sears, M.D., a pediatrician and father of eight who believes that children form a strong emotional bond with parents or caregivers during childhood with lifelong consequences.

Attachment Parenting International
has developed eight principles of attachment parenting that stress forming an immediate bond with the child.

The principles include:

1. Preparing for pregnancy, birth and parenting.
2. Feeding with love and respect.
3. Responding with sensitivity.
4. Using a nurturing touch.
5. Ensuring safe sleep both physically and emotionally.
6. Providing consistent and loving care.
7. Practicing postive discipline.
8. Striving for balance in personal and family life.

To help parents achieve these principles, Dr. Sears has identified "The Baby B's," seven tools designed to improve the parent-child relationship.

They include:
1. Baby bonding
2. Breastfeeding
3. Babywearing
4. Bedding close to baby
5. Believing in the language value of your baby's cry
6. Being wary of baby trainers
7. Balancing

Naturally, attachment parenting has come with some controversy. Some mothers choose to formlua feed. Some feel babywearing spoils children. There are claims that co-sleeping can cause SIDS. Sharon Hays, sociologist and author of "The Cultural Contradictions of Motherhood"," feels this parenting philosophy imposes unrealistic obligations on parents, particularly for working women.

Despite the criticisms, attachment parenting has grown in popularity, giving birth to a network of support groups across the country. Advocates claim that this parenting style encourages a secure view of the world.

Experts, including Dr. Sears, agree that parents must use these guidelines and tools to create a parenting style that works best for their family.

Permissive Parenting: Too Lenient?

Permissive parenting, also called indulgent, lenient or non-directive parenting, is a parenting style in which parents have few controls over or demands on their children.

In these families, parents are very involved in their children's lives, but have few behavioral expectations for their kids. These parents are more concerned with being their children's friends and fear their kids may rebel against them if they are too hard on them. Permissive parents are usually the children of strict parents.

As children with permissive parents age, they are likely to be impulsive and underachieving. As teenagers, they also experiment with drugs and alcohol more frequently because they know they will not be punished if they get caught. Additionally, these children may have unrealistic self-esteems, blaming others for their mistakes.

However, children with permissive parents often learn good social skills.

Though permissive parents often feel that they are helping their children by letting them do whatever they want to do, they may be in for a shock when they realize their lack of boundaries has created insecure, demanding, selfish kids with no sense of personal responsibility.

The 2009 Stress in America survey, administered by the American Psychological Association, is the first to ask children about their stress levels, according to U.S. News & World Report. The results are startling: One third of the 1,206 children ages 8 to 17 surveyed admitted that they are more stressed out than they were just one year ago.

Jon Gosselin

Jon Gosselin is a husband and father who became famous appearing on the TLC reality show "Jon and Kate Plus 8." The show follow the lives of Jon, his wife Kate Gosselin, and their eight children -- fraternal twins Cara and Madelyn, born in 2000, and sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel, born in 2004.

Jon Gosselin was born on April 1, 1977, in Wyomissing, Penn. A high school graduate, Jon worked as an IT analyst prior to becoming a reality show celebrity.

Jon Gosselin met his future wife Kate Kreider in 1997, and the couple married on June 12, 1999. After Kate was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, the couple turned to fertility treatments and became pregnant with twins Cara and Madelyn, who were born on October 8, 2000. In 2003, Jon Gosselin and his wife again turned to fertility treatments to become pregnant. On May 10, 2004, Jon and Kate Gosselin became parents to sextuplets.

Jon Gosselin and his family first appeared on television in 2004 on an NBC special called "Home Delivery." Other specials followed and in April 2007, "Jon and Kate Plus 8" began airing as a regular series on TLC. In 2009, after eight seasons of "Jon and Kate Plus 8," rumors began to swirl that Jon Gosselin and his wife were having marital problems. In May 2009, photos of Jon Gosselin partying with female students at a Juniata College party surfaced. More photos showing Jon Gosselin dancing with young women at a local bar were released later.

After Jon was photographed with young women, the couple addressed the situation on their show. Denying that his marriage was on the rocks, Jon Gosselin claimed that he had never cheated on his wife. Despite obvious strains in the relationship, the couple continued to film the reality show. In June 2009, Jon and Kate announced on the show that their marriage was over. Despite a growing backlash, the couple continued to allow cameras into their home.

Jon Gosselin quickly moved on from his relationship with Kate and began dating other women. He was accused of having a relationship with his children's nanny as well as Kate Major, a Star Magazine reporter. After numerous photos were published showing Jon Gosselin with Hailey Glassman, the daughter of Kate Gosselin's plastic surgeon, Jon admitted that he and Glassman were dating.

In September 2009, TLC announced that Jon Gosselin had been dropped from "Jon and Kate Plus 8" and that the show would now focus on Kate as a single mother. Within days, Jon Gosselin demanded that TLC cease and desist filming at the couple's Pennsylvania home, and the show's production was halted indefinitely.

Jon and Kate's split continues to play out in public. In a recent interview with ParentDish, Jon discussed his his relationship with Kate, his children and his girlfriend. He also revealed that he is in the process of writing a book about his life.

Neonatal: Caring for Premature Babies

A normal pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks. If a baby is born three or more weeks early, she is considered premature. Babies born close to 37 weeks usually do not have many problems, but babies born between 32 and 37 weeks may need to stay in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to receive help eating, breathing, staying warm, and continuing to develop before going home. Babies born before 32 weeks are the most likely to have serious problems and may have to stay in the NICU for an extended period of time.

Preterm babies must often be tube-fed or even fed intravenously (through a vein) because they cannot eat on their own. Others need ventilators to help them breathe. Premature babies also can have difficulties staying warm, so they are kept in heated beds called isolettes.

A neonatologist is a doctor who specializes caring for preterm babies. If the hospital you choose to deliver your baby at has a NICU on-site, you will be introduced to the staff neonatologist. If your baby needs to be moved to another hospital, you can ask your ob/gyn for a reference or you can find a doctor on the Revolution Health web site.

Chinese Birth Calendar: What Is It?

The Chinese Birth Calendar is a chart that can be used to predict your baby's gender by inputting the mother's age and the month of conception.

This method is considered by some to be 99 percent accurate -- however, you must convert both your age and the month of conception to the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar combines the lunar and solar systems, which makes it different from the Western Gregorian calendar. Chinese Fortune Calendar web site allows you to convert your age and to convert the month of conception. The site also has an online converter which adjusts both your age and the month of conception at once to predict your baby's gender with one click.

Although many claim this gender predictor are accurate, it's not a scientific method. It can, however, be another great baby prediction game to play during your pregnancy.

Michelle Obama, A Really Close Second

Where do you fall in the priority line-up in your family? If you're like most women, you put everyone else first. Michelle Obama has a better approach; she puts herself "a really close second" after her kids.

In an interview with Katie Couric for Glamour magazine's Woman of the Year issue, the First Lady said it was much more difficult to find a work-family balance when she was a senator's wife. Now that she's in the White House, with all its accompanying staff support, life has gotten easier.

While we all can't have that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue address, Obama encourages moms to reach out and ask for help where they can find it.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

If a pregnant woman drinks during her pregnancy, she runs the risk of giving her unborn child fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy does not always lead to FAS. Doctors are unsure exactly how much alcohol can cause problems, but they agree that consuming any alcohol is unsafe. They advise pregnant women and those attempting to become pregnant to avoid alcohol.

When alcohol is consumed, it crosses the placental barrier and can stunt the growth of the fetus. It can also cause atypical facial features (a flat face with narrow eye openings) and damage brain structures and neurons. Permanent brain damage is often common because developing brain cells and neurons become malformed from the alcohol exposure.

As the child ages, he or she can show other emotional, physical, mental and/or behavioral problems. This can cause attention-deficit disorder, poor memory, poor cause-effect reasoning and impulsive behavior.

Unlike at other times in life, the fetal brain is constantly developing, meaning there is no "safe" time to drink alcohol while pregnant.
